As the weather turns cooler, the festivity spirits fill the air and remind us Christmas is just around the corner. We began celebration last night, not for the holiday though, but for the birthdays of two good friends.
We met at the Piemonte trip, the land of Barolo. So the best gift to bring along is a vintage Barolo – 1961! The wine was shipped from Italy and sat in my cellar for more than 2 months, so it should pass the bottle shock stage.
I expected the wine would be quite delicate and the aroma would disappear very quickly. It should be the first red to taste before moving to the powerful Bordeaux and Grange.
The color and the intensity of the wine was very light, you could almost see though the glass. The aroma was complex; the best description came from the most charming lady in the group – “ black pudding in a glass”!
There were plum, floral, cedar wood, vanilla and so much more. The tannin was very soft.
Surprisingly, the aroma did not disappear quickly. The length was long and it certainly didn’t taste like a 50-year old wine.
