Wine Festival is a good way to explore wines you will seldom buy and be a bit adventurous in tasting wines from different parts of the world.
The Wine Festival at Cyberport ran for 3 days from Oct 25th. There were around 20+ companies showcasing their wines.
The famous British wine merchant Berry Bros was the first one I visited. The bar was named Wine Knowledge Bar; there were 10 wines that you could try. The sequence was from dry, light, fruity to sweet wines. It was a mix of red, white, sparkling and sweet wines. The wine consultants were very knowledgeable and explained the difference in the wine style.
The home grown Hong Kong winery – The Eight Estate Winery were showcasing their first vintage – 2007. All the grapes were from Washington State of USA. The first vintage included 5 whites, 3 reds and 3 dessert wines.
I tasted the 3 reds – Shiraz, Merlot and Heritage. Heritage is the Bordeaux style wine – blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc. My tasting notes were certainly not exactly the same as their tasting notes. All three wines had a sweet finish, which their tasting notes described as hint of chocolate finish.
The Shiraz showed pepper and plum with a hint of vanilla and chocolate at finish. The Merlot showed red fruit, grass and a sweet finish. The Heritage showed strong grass, black fruit and a sweet finish.
The winery is open to public on Saturday and you could have a closer look at how they make their wine and also taste their wine.
I went on and tasted wines from Italy, Germany and Greece! Life is good!
I went there and it should be convenient to you. Their winery is located in Ap Lei Chau, opposite to the Auto Italia Showroom. Only HKD60 to taste 3 wines.
