Bordeaux in June, what was it like? It was cool in the morning and hot in the afternoon, the perfect micro climate that vines thrive for.
The blue sky was exactly what I remembered as last summer. This time, instead of joining a tour, I wrote to a few vineyards ahead of time and confirmed private tours & tastings at 4 vineyards – Ch Haut Brion, Ch Palmer, Ch Pichon Lalande & Ch Lynch Bages.
Pichon Lalande was the third vineyard we visited. I always like to describe the wine as a feminine wine from a masculine appellation. Feminine because the tannin is usually smooth and silky, it has more Merlot than most of the wines from this appellation. Feminine also because of the history of the Chateau, the original owner was a lady – Comtesse Lalande.
After the tour of the facility, we were led to the Tasting Room, and it was definitely a room with a woman’s touch. There was a terrace with white furniture, overlooking the vineyard. The Chateau was on the right and you could sit on the terrace with the clear blue sky and vines stretching miles and miles to the horizon.
We tasted the 2009 vintage; the wine was already blended and aged in French oak barrels at the Chateau. We were very surprised to have the opportunity to taste the current vintage. It showed a lot of fruit and the tannin was soft with a hint of spice. A very feminine wine indeed !
