I guess the chance of tasting the 1953 vintage from a classified Bordeaux already got my attention for the wine dinner, and the rest were just details I didn’t really care.
Emeline Borie, the 3rd generation of the owner was hosting the dinner organized by BBR. At dinner she told us her grandfather bought the vineyard in 1978, but the previous owner took all the wines from the cellar. So they have to buy back the wines in the market, including the 53’ we were going to taste.
There were 9 vintages to pair with the dinner; staring with 09’, followed by 01’, 95’, 90’, 82’, 79’ and then the legendary 53’.
The ones I remembered the most now are 09′ and 53′.
09′ were samples from the barrels; the color showed some hints of purple showing a young wine. Surprisingly the wine was not as tannic as expected; there were abundance of fruits on the nose and palate, some sour cherry and black fruit.
Then the highlight of the evening – the 53’ vintage. The first thing that strikes us was the color; pale tawny reminded me of cedar. On the nose and palate, it showed cinnamon, mint, vanilla, cedar. It was quite a unique experience to taste a wine more than 50 years old and still very enjoyable!
