The two wine dispensing machines at the bar area of SML were quite eye catching. There were 8 selections for both red and white. The restaurant was in the midst of promoting Mexican fair – chicken quesadillas, shrimp fajitas, salsa sauce, smoked salmon marinated in chili pepper and cilantro – my favorites!
Choosing a wine to enjoy with the food was always fun. I was being a bit adventurous on the night and chose two whites and tried the tasting portion; a Yarra Valley Pinot Gris and a Willamette Valley Riesling.
Yarra Valley is very close to Melbourne where as Willamette Valley is in Oregon State which is north of California. Both are cool climate region, supposedly famous for Pinot Noir.
The Yarra Valley Pinot Gris was dry with crisp acidity. The nose and palate showed citrus with a sweet finish. The Willamette Valley Riesling was a bit off dry and acidic. The nose showed petro and on the palate it showed peach and melon.
The cilantro, onion, chili pepper in the seasonings would match well with the citrus flavor of the Pinot Gris. The sweet after taste was a good balance with the mildly spicy nature of the Mexican dishes. A simple wine for a delicious meal!
The “enomatic”! Same dispenser as the one we saw at La Spinetta’s tasting room.
The non-Mexican portion of the SML menu is great too!
